The Eugene water bodies (ponds, lakes) layer, like its complement Eugene creeks, represents the destination for significant amounts of stormwater runoff in the Eugene area.
<purpose>The Eugene water bodies layer, like its complement Eugene creeks, represents the destination for significant amounts of stormwater runoff in the Eugene area. This digital layer is closely integrated with the stormwater pipe layer, with numerous pipes terminating into these lakes and ponds as well as being the terminus for larger stream channels (Willamette River, Amazon Creek, the Millrace). This data is used frequently on GIS thematic maps of all types for reference to show the natural context of waterways. The accurate representation of Eugene lakes and ponds is critical for stormwater modelling and analysis, as well as for creating accurate usable field maps for Public Works Engineering and Maintenance. There are few limitations on the use of this data with the understanding that the lakes and ponds derive from multiple sources. Like any complex, interconnected digital data improvements in accuracy will occur over time as field supervisors note corrections in writing and feed that information back to GIS personnel. Some lakes have been named, many others have not. The representation of non-lakes on this layer, such as the Willamette river, Amazon Creek and larger downstream channels, allows large scale plots to show these waterways at appropriately. Several islands in these larger waterways contain the name 'out' so a reselect to exclude those would be appropriate for mapping. Annotation levels need to be refined for different scale plots.</purpose>

<othercit>In 2008 the waterbody boundaries were refined to align with the 2008 air photos (at !" = 100' scale). This Eugene lakes file contains polygon attributes that have a Source code which identifies the department or Agency responsible for its creation: cewq = city of eugene public works water quality team lcog = lane council of governments nwi = national wetlands inventory Maintaining and adding to this list may be helpful if the City wants to track how additional polygons get added. The 1994 black and white aerial photography that is available in /regional/metro/airphoto was used in many cases to confirm and locate water features. Although these section centered images were adjusted to fit the parcel file there is always some spatial distortion between multiple layers of information in GIS, in this case adjusting lake locations relative to the parcel file, stormwater pipes, and the metro airphoto. As of July, 1997, the lakes and ponds are accurate relative to those sources. An intermediate set of 20 checkplots at 1":=400' scale was produced after an initial round of edits and carefully reviewed by personnel in the City of Eugene Public Works department for accuracy and completeness. Further edits were identified during this process, subsequently incorporated into the file and a final set of 20 plots was generated. Final plots, the digital files, an 8mm DAT tape with a copy of the full project directory and all intermediate checkplots were delivered to the City on 8/5/97.</othercit>
